Featuring more than 100 paintings and a dozen surreal photographs of masked children enjoying recess, The Art of Play weaves together the diverse voices of kids and working artists with play scholarship.
This book emerged from Recess Access, a servicelearning project that donated chalk, ropes, balls, and hoops to nine schools in different sections of Philadelphia. A portion of the proceeds of The Art of Play will support recess advocacy.

The proposed manuscript represents a needed and vital contribution to scholarship and to social action. Beresin is dead-on in her assessment of the devaluation of play in social life and in academic understanding. Her approach to understanding the play of Philadelphia school children as a form of art is quite promising, especially is it is grounded in their experiences and in the effort of Recess Access project.
